The Mummy bats lead-off for Universal Monsters Universe

Universal Studios is prepared to launch their new Monster Universe (edit: the “Dark Universe”) with the upcoming release of The Mummy, which stars Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Jake Johnson, and Sofia Boutella. Directed by Alex Kurtzman, The Mummy hits theatres on June 9. Check out the new trailer.

The first trailer for The Mummy had me very unsure, but I want to be surprised by this so I’m fine avoiding anything more spoilerish. Hopefully, it will surprise. I am hoping for more of a return to horror rather than the adventure spin given to the last reboot, and less the Mission: Impossible vibe the first trailer gave me.

I am really curious about where they’re going with all of this. Crowe plays Dr. Jekyll and means to be the unifying character between the individual movies, with will include Wolf Man, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Dracula, etc. Seems like a ballsy move to lead off with a Tom Cruise movie considering how he tends to turn a lot of people off these days.

But I’d love to get your thoughts on this?
