All roads have led to here. The nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards are in and no shocker, LA LA Land leads with 14 nominations.

LA LA Land.

LA LA Land‘s 14 nominations ties it for the most all time with All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997). Moonlight earned 8 nominations, including a nomination for director Barry Jenkins. Arrival also snagged 8 Oscar noms, but unfortunately, nothing for Amy Adams, nor Jeremy Renner.

There were of course a few surprises, but for the most part, this year’s Oscar nominations were predictable. Viggo Mortensen getting nominated for Best Actor (Captain Fantastic) was a bit of a shock, but deserving. Deadpool not filling out that potential tenth Best Picture nomination was disappointing but not really all that surprising.

What I love is the Academy spread the love diversely this year after years and years and years of #OscarSoWhite. What I love even more, is these performers didn’t get nominated “just because they’re black” — they were nominated because they absolutely deserve to be there.

Fences.

Viola Davis is fierce in Fences. She kicks Denzel’s ass all over the screen — and he’s awesome in the movie as well. Hidden Figures was incredible and Octavia Spencer is a huge reason why. Although I can’t help but be disappointed that homegrown KC native Janelle Monáe didn’t get nominated, but she’s young and talented. She’ll be back.

Moonlight is a fantastic movie and has a chance to really do some damage at the Oscars. Director Jenkins is in the conversation and Naomie Harris has to go up against Viola. But Mahershala Ali is the favorite in his category.

Obviously LA LA Land dominated. I’m stoked Emma Stone was nominated, obviously. Is it the best movie? It’s one of my favorites from the year and it made my Top 10 of 2016. But the best? Honestly, I think it’s a crap shoot. If Moonlight, Manchester or LA LA Land win Best Picture, I won’t be surprised, nor disappointed.

ABC will telecast the 89th Annual Oscar Awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 26.
